We’re just a few months away from Hip-Hop’s 50th anniversary, the culture’s half-century anniversary. While the event programming may have slowed down, the musical tributes continue. For iconic DJ Premier, it means a reunion of veteran hip-hop masters.
On his latest song from his indie label (To The Top), “Can U Dig That,” the heavyweight chooses none other than Snoop Dogg. Recalling previous vault demos, the pair used an updated pastel production to showcase their love of California.
No record would be complete without Premier’s signature scratching techniques. Still, it’s the use of the sample from the Average White Band’s 1976 song “Overture” that really fosters a calm, cool and collected rhythm. It’s been over two decades since the two last worked together, but you wouldn’t know it from their creative chemistry.
“Teach you the recipe/West Coast mentality/Tupac and ice cubes/Short dog and 40 water (yeah)
Ice-T and Eazy-E / Quik Put you on the B, I’ll put you on the C / DPG, stay away from the shootouts, let the beef stop / Peace to the gods / All the G’s in the yard / Born to be a squab / Hard work It’s worth the hard work,” Snoop raps.
