In 2018, Tierra Whack hit the music world like a comet. Her visual album “Whack World” introduces the Philadelphia native as a polymath. Echoing the likes of Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott, Whack was immediately hailed as the next big thing in rap.
With her razor-sharp bar, eye-catching hook skills and unique visual style, she ticks all the boxes and more. Then, maddeningly, she disappeared like a ghost. The years passed without any proper full-length album being released. While there were a few singles, EPs, and guest appearances, nothing really delivered on the promise teased by her white-hot but fleeting opening performance.
Enter: WORLD WIDE WHACK, the 28-year-old singer’s official debut album. Second single “27 CLUB” hints at why it took Whack six years to follow up Whack World: “Looking for something to commit to/Killing myself,” she croons over the infectious melody, Whack on A recent interview confirmed that this is an autobiography. The album is filled with allusions to Whack’s mental health struggles, but thanks to Whack’s ability to balance darkness with her signature wit and playfulness, the album never feels overbearing.
This album depicts Tierra Whack’s inner world, from melancholy and melancholy to silly and optimistic. Dissonance is often present throughout the album’s 15 songs. Within Whack’s vast emotional palette, bragging bars coexist with deep self-doubt, while joy and despair share a bunk. “Drive a Bentley truck/You drive a Beetle,” Wacker declared on the “Chanel Pit.” A song later, on “NUMB,” Whack hints at the desperation lurking beneath the boast: “My wounds are still open/My emotions are out of control/The devil continues to provoke/My joy has been stolen.”
Like rapper Jerry Seinfeld, Wacker mines everyday details and keenly observes her inner world and outer surroundings. She alternately explores the depths of her soul with unflinching honesty and explores universal truths. Wack admits to feeling overwhelmed by life (“Life is difficult”) but also appreciates life’s small pleasures (“Soap and water give me strength”).
The paint-splashed world of Whack is completed by an equally colorful production, thanks to the close collaboration of a group of long-time collaborators, chiefly J Melodic, ProdbyBRianNA, and Nick Verruto. Beats range from digital clicks and whirrs to aggressive drums and dreamy swirls. On tracks like “ACCESSIBLE” and “INVITATION,” the tempo is a little slower, but the tempo is generally consistent with Whack’s playful and intimate exploration of the deepest reaches of her psyche.
The penultimate song “TWO NIGHT” perfectly embodies the talents of Tierra Whack. Her humor, levity, and emotional depth are on full display: “My last meal will probably be chicken and chips/I’m black, so you shouldn’t be surprised… Everybody dies, you live, you do too Die,” she raps over the instrumental. It sounds like what Alice heard when she fell down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.
In an age of algorithm-induced sameness, Whack urges herself and her collaborators to find new concepts, processes, and voices. She reflects the human experience in a neat, colorful package. Whether staring into a never-ending well of despair or overconfidently singing in the shower, WWW shines when Whack applies her otherworldly talents to relatable, everyday struggles.
