Lil Nas X opens up about his bipolar disorder diagnosis in a personal video and shares details about new music.
The “Old Town Road” rapper posted a video to his Instagram page on Wednesday (June 17) in which he updated fans on his mental health journey following his 2025 diagnosis of bipolar disorder. In this clip (shown below), Lil Nas X feels upbeat and candid about his rehab.
“I’ve been in recovery for a few months and I’ve been back home since then, whether it’s in Atlanta with my family or in Los Angeles with myself and my friends,” he said. “Trying to keep myself grounded and out of my own head. I now have a therapist and a psychiatrist, which really helps.”
The Grammy winner admitted he had a hunch he had bipolar disorder but ignored it because he didn’t want to take any medication.
“I feel like I’ve known it for the past few years, but I didn’t want to admit it because I didn’t want to take medicine,” he said. “I mean, I’m already black and gay, like, damn, God. Gay, bipolar, like I’m living in extreme hardship mode,” he added jokingly.
Nonetheless, Lil Nas X assured fans that he’s doing fine.
“I’m doing better, I feel better, I can create freely and I have less fear in my heart. I just smell the roses,” he said.
The 27-year-old artist also revealed that he is working on new music but is not yet fully immersed in the recording process.
“I don’t fully understand that yet,” he said. “But I’m excited to do this and excited to be on this journey with you.”
Following his arrest in August 2025, a Los Angeles judge ordered Lil Nas X to enter a mental health diversion program in April 2026 to address his bipolar disorder. The court will dismiss the felony assault charge in the case if he adheres to a prescribed medical plan and stays out of legal trouble for two years. Additionally, Lil Nas X cannot possess weapons or threaten any violence during the two-year program.
