One of hip-hop’s most influential figures and Zulu founder Afrika Bambaataa recently passed away after a battle with cancer. Bambaataa, a pioneer who played an important role in the development of hip-hop, has died at the age of 67, leaving a legacy that will never fade. May he rest in peace.
Often referred to as the Godfather of Hip-Hop, Bambaataa was instrumental in perpetuating the power and friendship of Hip-Hop. According to the Hip Hop Alliance, Bambaataa started a “global movement rooted in peace, unity, love and fun” – from his early days as a member of the Spade Gang to cultivating peaceful coexistence as part of the world’s Zulu nation.
Despite Bambaataa’s celebrated legacy, it must also be noted that in 2016 he had to resign as leader of the Zulu nation after allegations of sexual abuse surfaced. Although Bambaataa insisted they were baseless and an attempt to damage his legacy, he ultimately lost a civil case involving human trafficking and child abuse by failing to appear in court.
