A woman in Nashville, Tennessee, tries to claim her luggage from a Spirit Airlines counter after a flight. She noticed the door was closed – which was odd since the sign on the door said it was supposed to be open.
TikTok founder Shaundra (@mama_shaundra) posted a video on March 5 about her experience. In the video, she walks to the Spirit baggage office at Nashville International Airport. The door is locked. “This is my luggage,” she said, pointing to a bag behind the locked door. “‘We are open from 2:30pm to 9pm’ It’s now 2:45pm”
In the caption, Chaudra tagged Spirit Airlines and wrote, “I went to all Spirit Airlines counters and no one was around.”
Audience Reactions to Nashville Women’s Mental Baggage Incident
In the comments section of the video, viewers reacted to Shodra’s Spirit Airlines luggage situation.
“This is why I carry extra items on my journey to my destination and only travel with carry-on luggage,” said one viewer.
“Have you read the fine print?” another viewer asked. “It says ‘see ticket counter’ for assistance with baggage claim,” Chodela replied, saying she had visited all the Spirit desks at the airport but couldn’t find anyone to help.
A third joked: “To be fair… the staff probably didn’t expect your mental flight to be on time.”
Spirit also responded in the comments section, telling Shaundra that the company wanted to look into the matter for her.
What should you do in this situation?
Spirit Airlines’ baggage services office at Nashville International Airport is open when the airline schedules flights. The ticket counter is supposed to be open from 3:30am to 10pm, so there seemed to be a staffing issue or some other issue that afternoon.
For mishandled luggage, Spirit recommends filing a claim before leaving the airport, within 4 hours of arrival for domestic flights and 7 days of arrival for international flights. Passengers can also use the baggage service portal to communicate with Spirit customer service.
At least Sandra knew where her luggage was, even if she couldn’t get to it just yet. The internet is awash with questions and concerns from travelers about Spirit’s baggage fee schedule and its rules and stories of lost or delayed luggage.
After a traumatic experience, one traveler posted on Reddit urging others to never check bags on Spirit Airlines flights if they have connecting flights elsewhere.
Airlines must compensate passengers for incidental expenses incurred during baggage delays, and cannot arbitrarily set the amount of daily temporary charges. Bags are generally considered “lost” between 5 and 14 days after a flight, but this number varies by airline.
If the Department of Transportation finds that an airline has “unreasonably” refused to consider a baggage lost for an unreasonable amount of time, the airline could be subject to enforcement action.
