It’s no secret that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is a hip-hop fan. So when he was asked who his favorite top five rappers of all time were, he listed some notable lyrical heavyweights.
On Tuesday (March 17), New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani spoke with educator and author Jose Vilson about his initiative to expand New York’s 3-K and Pre-K programs across all five boroughs, in a viral video that captured social media attention. In the video, which can be watched below, Wilson ends his conversation with the mayor by asking him a tough question.
Wilson asked Mayor Mamdani who his five favorite rappers of all time were. It took him a minute, but he listed his favorites.
“I have to put Nas in there because he once represented Queensbridge Uptown, the largest public housing development in North America,” the mayor began. “I also have to say, growing up, for me, Lupe Fiasco — he was one of my top rappers.”
“I also have a soft spot for Common,” he continued. “I also have to put Jay-Z in it.”
“I think as New York City, we have to get Biggie on board,” he concluded.
Apparently, Lupe Fiasco heard Mayor Mamdani mention his name in his top five list. He reposted the video on his Instagram account, adding a flexed bicep emoji in the caption to show his approval.
