Twin Cities rapper Nur-D just hired the same lawyer who gave Rodney King $3.8 million.

Nur-D hired attorney John Burris and his Los Angeles firm Burris, Nisenbaum, Curry & Lacy. Burris won a massive civil jury verdict against King in 1991 after four Los Angeles police officers beat him on camera.

On January 24, federal agents pepper-sprayed Nur-D and violently detained him during protests in Minneapolis. Video shows multiple masked agents attacking him from behind as he walks away with his hands up.

Nur-D and his wife, Sarah, plan to sue the Department of Homeland Security, ICE, Customs and Border Protection, Border Patrol and other federal agencies. The law firm said it would “take legal action against violations of civil liberties.”

The incident occurred amid the chaos that followed the shooting death of Alex Pretty by federal agents. According to the law firm’s statement, Noor-D was leaving the scene when agents struck him with a projectile from behind.

“[Nur-D] “He was pushed to the street, knelt down by multiple agents at once, subjected to excessive vulgar language, and had an unknown chemical weapon sprayed in his face,” the statement read. “The desperate cries of his wife, Sarah, were heard as she begged the agents on scene for his life.”

Video captured Noor-D screaming, “You have to kill me!” as agents loaded him into a pickup truck. He was treated at Hennepin County Medical Center and released that night.

On January 29, Nur-D posted on Instagram that he was safe at home. “There really is no template for ‘I survived an attack by the federal government,'” he wrote.

The rapper urged supporters to focus on “the families of those who can’t say that.” Representatives for the Department of Homeland Security have not yet responded to a request for comment on the Noor-D case.
