NBA star Kyrie Irving spent $11,001 on LaRussell’s new album, and the rapper aims to sell 100,000 copies independently.
On January 1, the Bay Area rapper announced that he would be selling his new album, Something’s in the Water, without record label support, with a goal of selling 100,000 copies. Buyers can pay a minimum of $0.99 for the item. Russell announced on Sunday (January 4) that he received a massive donation from future NBA Hall of Famer Kyrie Irving.
“I woke up this morning and there was a sale for $11,000,” Russell announced on the air. “I was like, who the hell is going to give me $11,000? And it happened to be No. 11 on the Dallas Mavericks.”
Russell later spoke with Carey on the phone, who praised the rapper’s artistry and grind.
“You earned it. You deserve it,” Carey said. “You work your butt off. I want to contribute to what you do. And I know you’re going to pay the price.”
Other celebrities also jumped in to help Russell achieve his goal. Snoop Dogg purchased the album on Monday (January 5) for $2,500.
“Uncle Snoop bought an album for $2,500!!!” Russell revealed on the X show. “It feels so good to know those who came before me, who paved the way for what I do, and who respected my art and my grind. I wouldn’t be doing what I do today if I had never seen Snoop on the Up In Smoke DVD!!! That DVD sparked my desire to rap!!!”
Comedian Cedric The Entertainer also donated $1,000. To date, Russell’s new album has sold more than 5,700 copies.
