DMX will be posthumously ordained to the priesthood in a ceremony at Foster Memorial AME Zion Church in Tarrytown in recognition of his deep spiritual influence and lifelong connection to his faith.

The late hip-hop icon born Earl Simmons will be officially recognized by the Gospel Cultural Center in a ceremony at 3 p.m. at the 164-year-old sanctuary, a former stop on the Underground Railroad.

Founded in 1860, the church was one of the earliest African Methodist Zion Episcopal churches in Westchester County and was designated a historical landmark for its role in helping enslaved people gain freedom.

“Count Simons wrestled with God in the public square, transforming his pain into a ministry of raw truth,” said Dr. Bishop Osiris Imhotep, founder of the Center for Evangelical Culture. “This appointment is a recognition of the sacred calling he fulfills every time he prays into the microphone.”

DMX, who died in 2021 at the age of 50, was known for his songs and mental vulnerability.

Throughout his career, he often began performances with heartfelt prayers and ended albums with spoken prayers.

In songs like “Lord Give Me a Sign” and “Prayer,” he blends emotion with spiritual reflection, turning his music into a form of ministry that resonates with millions.

The ordination ceremony will include scripture from Acts 17:31 and is expected to draw hip-hop enthusiasts, faith leaders and community members to celebrate the legacy of a man who used his platform to preach and perform.

The ceremony will take place on Saturday, January 10, 2026.
