Nipsey Hussle will be the focus of a long-awaited documentary series expected to premiere in 2026, with director One9 putting post-production on a project based on decades of rare footage and personal archives.
One9 confirmed that the multi-part series is nearing completion and awaiting release, telling Variety on December 5 that it includes never-before-seen material dating back to Hussle’s childhood.
“His dad recorded everything,” One9 said, describing the late rapper’s string of recordings from his first recording session at age 12 to his rise to fame as a Grammy-winning artist and entrepreneur.
The series, which will run for five to seven episodes, will be narrated by Hussle’s brother Blake Sam, with posthumous voiceover provided by the rapper himself. The work also includes unreleased music and excerpts from the audiobook Hussle recorded before his death in March 2019.
The documentary series is produced by Marathon Films, a company co-founded by Hussle, and is backed by LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Entertainment.
The project aims to provide a comprehensive look at Hussle’s life, including his early association with the Rollin 60s Neighborhood Crips, his independent music career and his community development work in South Los Angeles.
One9, who directed “Nas: Time Is Ilmatic” and recently completed “Allen Iv3rson” for Prime Video, said he intends to tell Husserl’s story through the same unfiltered lens. “We’re not sanitizing anything,” he said, noting that the series will explore triumphs and struggles.
Interviews include hip-hop heavyweights like Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar, as well as close friends from Hussle’s early days in Crenshaw.
The director said the goal was to show Husserl’s entire experience – from burning CDs on his home computer to launching real estate projects in his community.
In March 2019, 33-year-old Nipsey Hussle was shot and killed outside his Marathon clothing store. His death left a lasting impact on South Los Angeles, where the streets are still lined with murals honoring him.
The documentary series is currently seeking distribution partners and is tentatively scheduled to be released sometime in 2026.
