DJ Quik’s son has been convicted of murdering a man in 2022.
A jury on Thursday (December 4) convicted David Marvin Black Jr. of one count of second-degree murder and one count of shooting a motor vehicle, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The charges stem from the May 25, 2022, shooting death of Julio Moises Cardoza Jr. The shooting occurred after Cardoza got into a fight with another man in Downey, California. Blake then shot Cardoza Jr. from a nearby car and drove off. Cardozo suffered multiple gunshot wounds and later died at the hospital. The next day, Black was arrested for murder in Porter Ranch, California. He is being held on $2 million bail.
Before his arrest, Blake had a nascent rap career, performing under the name D. Blake. He appeared on Quik’s 2014 album The Midnight Life. Black has also released several solo records, including “Official”, “Rollin'” (featuring Kinglife Herb) and “I Wanna Know (Remix)” with Dom Kennedy.
KTLA 5 reported that Black was the liaison to Compton City Councilman Isaac Galvin at the time of the shooting. Galvin was removed from office in 2022 amid allegations of election fraud. In 2024, Galvan pleaded guilty to accepting bribes in exchange for a marijuana license.
Black will have to wait several months to learn his fate, as his sentencing date has been set for February 6, 2026. He faces 40 years to life in state prison.
