Murder charges have been filed against three men after De La Rosa was shot and killed during an alleged gang-related robbery in Los Angeles that left two other people injured.
Maria De La Rosa, who performed under the name Delarosa, was killed early Saturday morning while sitting in a parked car in Northridge.
The attacker approached the vehicle, demanded money and opened fire, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The 25-year-old singer was rushed to hospital but died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Prosecutors on Wednesday charged Francisco Otilio Gaytan, 27, Benny LiconGomez, 27, and Eduardo Lopez, 21, with one count of murder and two counts of attempted second-degree robbery. Lopez has not been taken into custody and remains at large.
“This was a callous and targeted attack that took the life of a young woman and artist and left her family and two survivors with deep, lifelong trauma,” said Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman. “My office will aggressively pursue this case to ensure that the perpetrators are held fully accountable for this senseless and deadly act of violence.”
The shooting happened around 1:25 a.m. and authorities believe it was gang-related. The two surviving victims were seriously injured in the attack.
De La Rosa was just starting to make waves in the Latin music world. She released her debut single “No me llames” in August, and her death sparked an outpouring of grief from the music industry. Jimmy Humilde and Los Gemelos de Sinaloa frontman Juan Moises also expressed their condolences online.
The case remains open as authorities continue to search for Lopez.
