Flavor Flav found himself in the middle of intense criticism as a guest panelist on Dancing with the Stars during Tuesday night’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-themed show.
The Public Enemy icon’s judging performance confused viewers and contestants alike, as he gave scores that many considered erratic and difficult to interpret.
The hip-hop legend’s troubles began immediately when he became confused about the basic scoring system and needed help from veteran judge Carrie Ann Inaba to understand his role.
His first big misstep came when he gave Dylan Efron and co-star Daniela Karagach a perfect 10 (their highest score of the season), while the other judges gave them a 9.
Flav continued his unpredictable scoring pattern throughout the night, giving up 9 and 10 points without providing a clear reason for his decision.
His most controversial moment was when he gave struggling contestant Andy Richter and partner Emma Slater a perfect 10, despite the pair having been at the bottom of the leaderboard multiple times in previous weeks.
The situation became even more complicated when Flavor Flav later revealed to People magazine that the nines he scored on Alix Earle and Val Chmerkovskiy were unintentional.
“I gave them a 9, which was a surprise. I really wanted to give them a 10 but they wouldn’t let me change,” he explained, claiming the lower score was due to equipment confusion rather than his assessment of their performance.
Viewers expressed even more frustration when fan favorite Danielle Fischer and partner Pasha Pashkov were praised for their performance throughout the competition but were eliminated. Minutes before her elimination was announced, the actress had just received a perfect score in the group stage.
Seven celebrity contestants remain in the competition: Andy Richter, Dylan Efron, Robert Irvine, Alex Earle, Elaine Hendrix, Whitney Levitt and Jordan Chiles.
The controversy surrounding Flavor Flav’s guest appearance has raised questions about the show’s guest judge selection process and consistency in scoring.
