Aziz Ansari said he returned to Los Angeles after an extended stay abroad and brought an unexpected accessory with him — his passport.
The Emmy Award-winning actor and comedian, who now lives in London, opened up about his concerns on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” citing the apparent increase in immigration enforcement as a reason for his discomfort.
“I haven’t been to L.A. in a while. I haven’t been here since all the ICE stuff started happening,” Ansari, 42, told host Jimmy Kimmel. “I’m nervous. I have friends who say, ‘We’re hiding the nanny in the basement. We might have to raise our kids. We don’t know what we’re going to do.'”
The Master of None creator doesn’t hold back when describing how the current immigration climate has affected him personally, even joking about the possibility of being mistaken for an undocumented immigrant.
“I was nervous, man. I always had my passport with me just in case people didn’t see the show, you know?” he said. “Although I do think it would be awesome if they did catch me because there would be an incredible viral video and all these people would be like, ‘Oh my God, that’s that guy from Parks and Recreation… who did Master of None.’ Oh my God, they’re going to arrest[Pakistani-American actor]Kumail Nanjiani!
Ansari’s comments came after a Department of Homeland Security report said ICE detained 5,000 people in Los Angeles between June and the end of August.
