Pras Michel should have faced judgment in a Washington court last month. Instead, the Fugees rapper found himself in a hospital where emergency colon cancer surgery was performed. Recent developments forced his long-awaited sentencing delay.
Michel’s legal name is Prakazrel Michel, who is scheduled to be sentenced in his federal conspiracy case and will face up to 20 years in prison. According to his legal team, health crisis is preferred.
“Pras is unable to attend Friday’s sentence hearing due to emergency medical surgery to clear the cancer,” his spokesman Erica Dumas told the Complex in a statement. “We hope he will gradually return to a complete and rapid recovery in his legal affairs and health journey.”
Now, the sentencing is scheduled for October 3, a few days before his 53rd birthday.
The Grammy-winning artist was convicted in 2023, with 10 counts linked to a grand international conspiracy involving millions of dollars in foreign funds. Prosecutors accused him of providing $865,000 in helping Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign. He later reportedly tried to convince the Trump administration to relax Malaysian financier JHO LOW. His role in the infamous 1MDB scandal is still worth the low.
Michelle has his own freedom while waiting for the sentence. He actively fights faith and maintains his innocence. His appeal focused on his alleged incompetent representation, accusing his defense attorneys of relying on artificial intelligence to develop his closing argument.
His case even opposed presidential politics earlier this year, when Hollywood Reporter revealed that Donald Trump was allegedly considering granting him a pardon. While the former president has never spoken publicly about the reports, Michelle’s team said they are “exploring all available options.”
Currently, he has recovered from the surgery.
