As part of the newly announced Detroit WNBA expansion team, Eminem will officially enter the sports ownership space, which is scheduled to play in 2029.
The WNBA confirmed earlier this week that Detroit will receive a new franchise along with Cleveland and Philadelphia, bringing the league’s total to 18 teams.
The Motor City ownership group is anchored by Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores, which includes Marshall Mathers, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, former NBA stars Grant Grant Hill and Chris Stars Grant Hill and Chris Webber, Lions chief owners Sheila Hamp and General Motors Mary Mary Barra.
The organization reportedly paid $250 million in expansion fees, indicating a serious investment in the future of Detroit women’s basketball. The team will play home games at Little Caesars Arena and plans to establish new training facilities and team headquarters along the city’s riverfront.
“It’s a huge win for Detroit and the WNBA,” Goles said in a statement. “Today, the WNBA returns to a long-term return of a city with a deep tradition of basketball roots and championships. Detroit played a key role in the league’s early growth and we are proud to reignite that legacy as the WNBA rises to new heights.”
Eminem’s involvement in the WNBA team is more than just a business move. The hip-hop veteran is known for his deep connections to Detroit and is using his platform to enhance local athletics and youth development efforts.
