Donald Trump attempted to close a libel lawsuit related to his 2024 remarks about the Central Park five-person debate, which a federal judge in Pennsylvania denied Thursday.

U.S. District Judge Wendy Beetlestone ruled Thursday (April 10) that cases filed by Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron Brown and Korey Wise could go forward, denying that Trump dismissed the motion.

The lawsuit centers on Trump’s presidential debate with then-Vice President Kamala Harris, where he mistakenly said the five people had admitted and were responsible for killing someone.

“They admit it – they said they admit it was guilty. I said if they confessed, they seriously hurt a person and ended up killing a person.” “If they promised to be guilty, then they promised we were not guilty.”

Harris has long criticized Trump’s long-term role in the case, referring to his full-page newspaper advertisement published in 1989 that demanded a death sentence after five teenagers were arrested.

“The full page ad in the New York Times,” Harris said. “Appointment to enforce five innocent black and Latino boys, five Central Parks.”

The five men were relieved after DNA evidence and another man’s confession, allowing them to remove joggers who raped and attacked Central Park in 1989. After years of public scrutiny and legal struggles, their initial beliefs were revoked.

Nevertheless, Trump’s legal team believes that his remarks are based on opinions from past events, rather than legally defamatory. Furthermore, they claim that the lawsuit is politically driven and lacks merit.

However, Judge Beetlestone disagreed and allowed the defamation claim to proceed. The judge also rejected a separate claim that intentionally caused emotional distress.

Plaintiffs, now known as five, are seeking monetary losses and punitive damages. They claim Trump’s remarks have caused further damage to their reputation and emotional damage.

Their lawyers say they are now planning to put Trump in liability for what they say is false and harmful public statements.
