Hiip-Hop’s origins at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue were a fierce battle, with New York City claiming murals violated advertising regulations.

A hip-hop mural designed to commemorate 1520 Sedgwick Avenue has sparked a legal conflict between city officials and the property ownership group’s labor force housing.

The graffiti installation is the center of disputes about what the city calls unauthorized and commercial signage.

This iconic Bronx apartment complex, widely celebrated as a launch pad for hip-hop culture due to DJ Kool Herc’s groundbreaking party in 1973, is now in legal controversy.

The New York City Department of Architecture has issued two violations. One offence cited the management of the property as the use of a prohibited sign that included a URL – the third time in Hip Hop New York City. They oppose websites selling souvenirs.

“We won’t back down,” said John Crotty, the founder of FOX 5 in New York. “We won’t stop. We won’t default on it.”

Crotty believes that murals are art, not marketing. He also believes that the city violates the artist’s First Amendment rights and the community’s ability to celebrate cultural heritage.

“We have the ability to speak,” Crotty continued. “Say and say the ability to be necessary where we think it is. It’s limited, but building signs has nothing to do with it because in the end, the message is about hip-hop. The building is where it starts. We don’t think we should bow to anyone.”

The New York City Department of Architecture has a different view.

Officials said Crotty failed to obtain proper approval from the Department of Cultural Affairs under the City Canvas Program. This is a city initiative that allows for the use of the guide’s temporary conservation structure for public art.

Crotty is fined $2,500, but he intends to compete in court.
