Doechii called for threats to LGBTQ+ rights with her spotlight on the Glaad Media Awards in Los Angeles and celebrated the resilience of the community.
The 26-year-old hip-hop artist considered bisexual, won the Outstanding Music Artist Award but did not reject her speech.
She said, referring to Glad’s mission, “It’s the same thing that I believe in and advocate for and continues to push me forward – especially now, the tough cultural change and rights of transgender and LGBTQ communities are under threat.
Her speech comes as LGBTQ+ advocates are increasingly concerned about the recent policy shifts that have occurred during Donald Trump’s return to office.
Transgender people report being bothered by changes in federal documents, including passports, that affect their gender recognition.
On stage, Doechii also acknowledged the legacy of past winners in her category.
“I’m very happy to receive the prestigious award from Glaad and join previous winners like Rapp, Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X, Sam Smith and Janelle Monáe,” she said. “It’s also a huge and special moment as Glaad celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, which is the Gigafactory.”
