A conspirator convicted in the killing of rapper Pop Smoke was sentenced to 29 years in prison on Friday (February 21) after apologizing to the late rapper’s family and his own relatives.
The popular smoke, born Bashar Jackson, was shot dead in a rental home in Los Angeles during a February 2020 robbery. “Welcome to the party.”
Cory Walker pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to the 2020 murder case, and he addressed the court before the sentencing was announced, expressing remorse.
“Even if the Jacksons are not in court today, I still want to apologize for my unforgivable behavior, although no apology is equal to the pain of life,” Walker said. “In addition, I want to take this opportunity to apologize to my family because they are The pain and embarrassment that has endured over the past five years and the apology to my community.”
Walker was sentenced to nine years in prison for major charges, plus 20 years of gun enhancement. The other two six-year sentences will be conducted simultaneously, keeping his total sentence at 29 years.
Walker’s defense demanded a waived fine for his poor status, but the court compensated $1,000 in damages, which would remain fined until he successfully completed parole.
“Today, I take responsibility for the horrible participation of these crimes and as I begin my journey to recovery, I assure you that I will stand out from negative behavior. Thank you,” Walker said.
A 20-year-old defendant, who was only 15 at the time of the crime, admitted first-degree murder and assault robbery in juvenile court. Another defendant, who was 17 years old at the time, pleaded guilty to voluntary homicide and family assault and robbery.
A fourth person was charged with reaching a settlement and was placed in a juvenile housing facility after conviction. Pop Smoke’s mother issued a statement earlier this month when Pop Smoke’s family skipped the sentencing.
“Everyone except me is over,” Jackson said. “It never ends for me. It’s unfair. I thank them for getting justice to the maximum extent of the law…but my life and No change. I still don’t have a son.”
