The highly anticipated murder trial of Duane “Keefe D” Davis, the only suspect in the 1996 shooting death of Tupac Shakur, has been postponed until 2026. The trial was originally set to take place this year but has now been delayed to allow more time for new witness interviews. The decision was made during a brief hearing on February 18, 2025, where Judge Carli Kierny confirmed the new trial date of February 9, 2026, to ensure that Davis’ legal team has enough time to prepare a solid defense.
Davis, who has long been suspected of orchestrating the drive-by shooting that killed Tupac on the Las Vegas Strip, had previously confessed to his involvement in the crime. However, his defense team now argues that he was not even in Las Vegas the night of Tupac’s death, despite evidence suggesting his role in planning the attack. In fact, Davis’ attorney, Carl Arnold, is also shifting blame, suggesting that Reggie Wright, the former security head for Death Row Records, may have been responsible for Tupac’s death.
As Davis’ legal team continues to investigate, they argue that time is necessary to ensure Davis receives a fair trial. “Given the magnitude of this case, we must have enough time to conduct a thorough defense,” said Arnold. Meanwhile, Wright has denied the accusations, calling the situation heartbreaking, especially since he had personal connections to the case.
Davis was arrested in September 2023, 27 years after Tupac was killed on September 6, 1996. While Tupac succumbed to his injuries a week later, on September 13, 1996, the case has remained an open wound for fans, family, and friends of the iconic rapper. Police allege that Davis was responsible for purchasing the weapons used in the shooting, which followed a confrontation between Tupac and Orlando Anderson, Davis’ nephew, earlier that night at the MGM Casino.
The trial’s delay means the long wait for justice in Tupac’s case will continue for at least another year, keeping the memory of the legendary rapper’s tragic death alive for those still hoping for answers.
