Rappers and the legal system have a long and complicated history. Hip-hop artists often find themselves in trouble with the law, jailed, or required to serve lengthy prison sentences. XXL looks at two dozen rappers currently in prison.
Diddy’s legal troubles have been a hot topic in 2024. The disgraced media mogul has been denied pretrial release and is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn until his case reaches the courts, which could take months. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
Lil Durk was arrested in October 2024 on suspicion of murder-for-hire in connection with the 2022 shooting death of Quando Rondo’s cousin in Los Angeles. On August 19, King Von died and sponsored five men to travel to California to attempt to kill Quando.
YNW Melly has been in jail since February 2019, when he was arrested for the 2018 murders of friends Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams. After a mistrial in July 2023, he remains in prison awaiting retrial, with a resumption plan to begin in September 2025.
Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison in August 2023 for the fatal shooting of Megan Thee Stallion in a high-profile 2020 case. Later, Young Thug pleaded guilty in the YSL RICO case and was released on probation in October 2024 after 15 years. Five years in prison.
There are also legendary cases where rappers find themselves in prison for life. Former hardcore rapper Big Lurch has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his female roommate and eating her body parts in a horrific incident in April 2002. Rapper Tay-K, known for his 2017 hit song “The Race” while on the run from police, was sentenced to 55 years in prison for his role in a 2016 robbery that left one person dead.
Unfortunately, one of the downsides of being in the spotlight is that rappers often get caught and have to go to jail or prison.
