At this weekend’s Rolling Loud music festival, Lil Yachty changed up his signature hairstyle, which many compared to Mase in the ’90s. As the waves rolled in, Lil Boat performed in a similar color outfit to what Mase wore in a music video in the early 2000s. He smiled and asked the crowd: “Do you like my new hair or what?” Social media was abuzz with jokes comparing the two artists on Friday (December 13). “He and Mace were father and son in another life,” one commenter quipped.
Another joked: “We have to ask Mase and Lil Yachty’s mom where they were nine months before Yachty was born.” Others chimed in, “OMG no he was really in ’97 of Mace,” using memes to fuel the viral moment and label Mace’s reaction. The inspiration behind Yachty’s new look remains unknown. But the change comes after the rap star faced backlash for his musical views and feuded with former friend and co-host Mickey and former Concrete Boy artist Karrahbooo.
In 2024, Mays transitioned from rap star to sportscaster, co-hosting his new show “It Is What It Is” with former rival Cam’ron, and his signature fade remains. In the late ’90s, Mase was known for wearing brightly colored outfits and was one of the biggest hip-hop stars, working with Mariah Carey, Notorious BIG, DMX, Jay-Z and Ye. Mase and Cam’ron will occasionally share new improvisations on the show.
Lil Yachty performed a set by Concrete Boys at Rolling Loud. Despite the buzz on social media, Yachty seemed unfazed, having fun and effortlessly maintaining his role as a cultural trendsetter. Whether it’s a bold hairstyle or a classic one, the rapper’s ability to spark conversation remains as sharp as ever. 2024 is going to be a great year for Lil Yachty. A joint album with James Blake was a highlight for the Atlanta native.
