Westside Gunn is in a creative mood. The rapper has been promoting the release of his upcoming album Still Praying for months. The album will be released on November 1 and will feature his usual Griselda team. But here’s the thing: Westside Gunn isn’t content with just giving fans an album. The rapper released an EP the day before “Still Praying” was released. 11 is a tight five-song collection, but the quality and production of the bars ensure this isn’t just leftover cuts from the album.
11 starts with “STONE”. The album’s production is slow and menacing, striking the perfect tonal balance given that the EP was released on Halloween. It’s the second song, though, that really makes it the top song Westside Gunn has released. “BIG DUMP BALLAD” features an absolutely mesmerizing sample of soul as Giselda Superstar waxes poetic about his life and troubled past. The bar is strong and the improv is as good as ever. “UNCLE HOWDY” was a gorgeous interlude, but the songs “CAIN TEJADA” and “PAULIN PAULIN PAULIN” ended on a surprising high at No. 11. “PAULIN PAULIN PAULIN” is particularly strong, with its drumless beat and reliance on Westside Gunn’s impassioned delivery.
