The cult classic “Warrior” has long been a staple of hip-hop, still captivating audiences decades after its 1979 release. Now, Lin-Manu Miranda, the acclaimed creator of the drama “Hamilton,” recently shared how the film inspired his latest work.
A musical project from writer/creative Eisa Davis and acclaimed producer Mike Elizondo – a creative journey now available on all streaming services. The production features performances by Lauryn Hill, Busta Rhymes, Marc Anthony, Billy Porter, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Colman Domingo and many more.
In an exclusive chat, Miranda told AllHipHop’s Chuck “Jigsaw” Creekmur that Warriors is his “most-watched movie.”
“Every time the MC mentions it, I get breathless,” he said, from ODB (Ol Dirty Bastard) to Common to the new LL Cool J album opener, “Spirit of Cyrus.” “I think part of the power of this movie and its influence on hip-hop music and culture is that it doesn’t judge its characters.”
“The Warriors” tells the story of a small Coney Island gang struggling to get home from the dust storms of 1970s New York City. The gang is framed for the murder of Cyrus, the unifying leader of the city’s various gangs.
“[Music] It just puts us in this situation,” Miranda explained. “Every gang in New York went to the Bronx with the promise of peace. That promise was shattered, the Warriors were blamed, and we had to go home. The story is “a very universal, beautiful, clear story,” he said. ”.
Renowned playwright and actor Davis stepped in to create a “musical love letter” rather than a traditional stage production.
“Action movies and musicals have always fought for the same territory,” Miranda said. “In action movies, when you can’t talk, you fight. In musicals, when you can’t talk, you sing.
Mike Elizondo, who has collaborated with Dr. Dre, Eminem and 50 Cent, brings diverse musical styles to this album.
Aisha Davis said, “Like us, he had a broad appreciation of music. He loves every genre as much as we do. We got to put pretty much all of that on the album, and we got to work with him and a band in a studio outside of Nashville and really get the sound to be something that we thought maybe someone would try this out one day. It’s so exciting”.
Miranda, Davis and Elizondo brought new energy to the Warriors, ensuring their legacy lives on in another form.
