Like it or not, Killer Mike is having the most successful year of his storied career. He has been in tears since the release of “Mic” and its deluxe edition last summer. The second solo album picked up multiple awards at this year’s Grammy Awards, upsetting one fan base in particular along the way. However, these incredible achievements have not left him complacent. On August 2, he followed up with “Michael & The Mighty Midnight Revival,” “Songs For Sinners And Saints,” a continuation of the rap/gospel hybrid. Now, Killer Mike is teaming up with video game giant Activision for a new single titled “Detonator.” The record is essentially the theme song for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which will be released on October 25th.
Hip-hop music and the iconic video game series have been associated for a long time. Back in 2013, Eminem did something similar in Call of Duty: Ghost’s “Survival.” Rapper Rock D The Legend and MC/producer El-P are here to bring it all to life, and it’s always exciting to see Run The Jewels reunite. It’s been a while since we’ve had a new project from the duo. If you remember, 2020 was the year they launched their fourth RTJ tape. El-P did contribute to MICHAEL, but it’s always a treat to hear Mike talk about his good friend’s work. “Detonator” comes with a music video, which you can watch below, and the song is also out now on DSP.
