Big Sean’s voice shook with emotion when he finally announced the release date for his highly anticipated album while revealing his COVID-19 diagnosis.
Earlier this month, Sean revealed that he was delaying his Better Me Than You album following the leak of an unfinished version of the project. During an Instagram Live on Monday (August 26), the Detroit rapper confirmed that the album will be released later this week.
“I’ve been having a hard time lately, really. It’s not easy,” he said, explaining that he is a “chronic overthinker.”
He paused for a long moment before adding, “You make art and you put your heart and soul into it.” Sean then turned his chair away from the camera and left the room. He returned shortly after to reveal his coronavirus diagnosis.
“When I had COVID last week, I was down, but I was still working on the album,” Big Sean shared.
He continued, thanking his mother and thanking her for helping him decide to drop the album. According to Sean, he delayed his release until his mother convinced him in a phone call the night before.
“She was giving me these words,” he explained. “I thought, look, I can go ahead and do something and do it exactly the way I want. But I’m going to put it off forever.
Big Sean took his mother’s advice and announced, “The album is coming out this week.”
Big Sean’s Better Me Than You album will be released on Friday, August 30th.
