Top Dawg Entertainment mastermind Punch has just revealed the remarkable story behind the deep cut of Kendrick Lamar’s most famous and critically acclaimed album.
Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) President Punch has revealed a surprising reveal about a pivotal moment in the creation of Kendrick Lamar’s critically acclaimed album, To Pimp a Butterfly. As the album nears completion, with about 70 percent of the work done, Kendrick Lamar finds himself grappling with the weight of his ambitious concept. A candid post shared by Punch on Instagram reveals how moments of creative uncertainty nearly derailed the iconic project, ultimately paving the way for K. Dot’s masterpiece Mortal.
“I remember Kdot feeling a little lost in the concept, which sometimes happens when you’re in the heat of battle, as new ideas and thoughts come in, it’s easy to lose sight of the original purpose,” Punch wrote in the post “In the heat of the battle.”
Feeling the pressure, Lamar turned to his trusted confidant for guidance.
“He hit me up and asked me if I could write something to summarize the album and where we were going,” he wrote. “I thought about it, wrote some words and sent them to him.”
But after those words were sent to Lamar, there was no immediate indication of their significance. Punch recalled. But little did he know that his contribution would become a key element of the album. A few months later, the album was finally completed. In its last playback before release, Punch was a surprise.
“He said ‘thank you’ and we just carried on,” he said. “We were listening to the album one last time before it came out, and I heard something new at the end of ‘Mortal Man’ that I’d never heard before. And then I realized these were the words I’d sent to Dot a few months before. !
Kendrick Lamar deftly incorporated Punch’s words into the album, a move that caught even the TDE president off guard. For Punch, the moment remains deeply personal, underscoring the secrecy surrounding Lamar’s creative process.
“Even though we were replaying it during the process, he never played that part,” he wrote. “This will always be a special moment for me.”

Being a part of To Pimp a Butterfly in such a meaningful way is something Punch cherishes, especially given the album’s profound impact on music and culture. “To Pimp a Butterfly” became an instant classic upon its release, cementing Kendrick Lamar’s status as one of the greatest artists of his generation. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 324,000 copies in its first week, an impressive feat in the age of streaming.
To Pimp a Butterfly was praised by critics and fans alike for its innovative blend of hip-hop, jazz, and funk, as well as its unflinching exploration of themes of race, identity, and social justice.
