This is the eighth studio record from Brooklyn-based New York skateboarder, MC, producer, songwriter, visual artist and model Navy Blue. In 2015, he achieved a breakthrough with his first EP “Aquarius”. He has since continued to make a splash in the underground music scene, releasing 9 EPs and 6 full-length albums before signing with Def Jam Recordings and producing his last album, Ways of Knowing, produced by Budgie to critical acclaim. More than a year later, he leaked “Memoirs” in “Armor.”
“Take Heed” opens with an upbeat instrumental from Budgie so Navy can tell everyone listening now that they should pay attention, while “Boulder” continues with samples thanks to Chuck Strangers who wish he knew then what we know today matter. “Low Threshold” has a bit of a lo-fi vibe, talking about cancer antics and leading him to the basement, while the self-produced “Slow” showcases his own perversion in a drum-less way.
At the end of the first half, “Basis” does a fresh soul flip, discussing everything he wants and more, then “Running Sand” connects a reverse loop, talking about progress is his sentence, his reflection It’s the opposition. “Red Roses” has to be my favorite song, from the Nicholas Craven beat to the lyrics that weigh the disadvantages as you feel the advantages before “Time Slips” gleefully embraces his dark side. “Say the Word” finds the driving force of Graymatter’s soulful instrumentals, and the drum-less “La Noche” closes out the EP, hoping you’ll find some inner peace.
“Soul Golden” is my favorite EP that Navy has ever produced, but I still find myself liking “Memoirs in Armor” as much as “Ways of Knowing” or even “From the Heart… & Gangway for Navy”. In just 27 minutes, he used abstract strokes to pick up the broken memories in the floral imagery and poetry, allowing everyone to sift through the dense metaphors to find the trauma and catharsis of rendering, spirituality, love and family in the painting. mosaic.
