Mustard’s ability to become a hit is unquestionable. He is one of the producers who defined the sound of the 2010s. He has countless classic singles. That being said, Mustard’s love for singles also extends to his albums. He’s had some decent solo gigs, but none of them compare to his one-off collaborations. so far. Mustard’s fourth album, Faith of a Mustard Seed, is his best to date. The Los Angeles-based producer ultimately brought all the pieces together to deliver a project that stands out because of its cohesion and consistency. There are truly too many great moments to capture in one go.
Kirk Franklin provides the spoken introduction, and once the album starts playing, it doesn’t slow down. “Up Down” breaks down ’80s synth melodies into superhero themes from the likes of Lil Yachty and 42 Dugg. The next song, “Pressured Up,” is full of G-funk, full of menacing lyrics from Vince Staples and ScHoolboy Q. The Travis Scott-assisted single “Parking Lot” is still one of the best songs here, but it’s proof that the mustard-sorted, sample-driven songs stand apart from the rest of the stuff here Materials fit. The album’s slower moments also affect the landing. Ty Dolla Sign sounded perfect on “A Song for Mama,” while Blxst skated on “Worth a Heartbreak.” There isn’t a weak link in the setlist, which includes Mustard’s own bar on the epic closer “Pray For Me.” Not only is Mustard still here, but it may have hit its peak.
