Sexy Red revealed she had never heard André 3000’s “The South Got Something to Say” speech at the 1995 Source Awards. While discussing iconic moments in hip-hop history on LeBron James’ show “The Shop,” Sexyy Red asked the Outkast member what he said without a clue.

“This was not planned,” André 3000 said of his speech. “Looks brave, but I’m nervous too###########. I’m just mad, man. We’re in New York, we love New York. We grew up on New York music, man …I just feel like, I don’t know, it just came out.

Sexyy Red, who was born in 1998, is not familiar with this story.

“Say what?” she asked.

André 3000 responded: “I say the South has something to say.”

James’ co-host and long-time business partner Maverick Carter encouraged sexyy red to watch the speech. Unfazed by the unfamiliarity of “Sexyy Red,” André 3000 continued to reflect on the 1995 Source Awards.

“I don’t even remember the whole thing,” he said. “But I just know I had a lot of hatred for the South at the time… I just remember I was really angry and really motivated because we were making this music all the time, man. We were in the dungeon the whole time. We just felt like, ‘Y’all not understand. ” Sometimes you have to show people, man.

He added, “But it gives you motivation! Now I really appreciate it because it makes it a lot harder for us.

Outkast won the Best New Artist Award at the 1995 Source Awards. Salt-N-Pepa nonchalantly announced the winner. The crowd booed Outkast, leading to André 3000 giving a history-making speech.

“I’m tired of these people…close-minded people, we have a demo tape and no one wants to listen to it,” he said. “But here’s the thing: The South has something to say. That’s all I have to say.

Watch his speech below.
