YTB Fatt has one of the most unique voices in the game right now. It’s vague and out of place. It doesn’t sound right half the time. That said, there’s something compelling about the rapper. YTB Fatt sounds so different from his peers that his quirks become features rather than flaws. The luxurious EP “An Zai” is a perfect example. Fatt included a total of six songs that were only 16 minutes long, but he deleted everything from the longer version. On “Free Bank,” YTB Fatt spits trash over a twisty, jazzy instrumental. However, it’s the second song on the album that better embodies On Zai’s sound.
“Shoot My Gun” has a transformative rhythm. Fate waxes poetic on a range of grim topics, with the drums providing only the bass punch. This song is jarring on first listen, but is quite possibly one of the most unique and interesting Fatt songs to date. However, there is no problem with EP being inaccessible. “Lonely” and “Hustler” are built around iconic R&B samples, which makes YTB Fatt’s flow more engaging than the first two songs. Lil Dann and Lil Durk were the only other artists to provide features, and they both did their own thing. Duke, in particular, shines in “One Last Time,” nearly stealing the show in the process. On Zai won’t change the minds of Fatt’s critics, but fans will love it.
