Young Thug’s legal battle is over. The rapper concluded the longest trial in Georgia history on Oct. 31. He accepted the plea deal and was quickly allowed to return home, citing the 15 years he had served, the New York Times reported. However, the judge presiding over the case, Paige Reese Whitaker, did stipulate that if the rapper violates probation in the future, he could face up to 20 years in prison. The thug was also sentenced to five years in prison.
Young Thug agreed to plead guilty to one gang charge, two firearms charges and three drug charges. The rapper also entered a no-contest plea to separate gang charges and racketeering conspiracy charges. What this basically means is that Thugger decided not to contest these specific charges. Pleading guilty to any one of them could result in legal consequences. That was a far cry from the deal pushed by prosecutors before Judge Whitaker handed down his sentence. Prosecutors recommended a 45-year sentence for the ATL rapper, with 25 years in prison and 20 years suspended.

In the hours leading up to sentencing, Young Thug’s future appeared to be in jeopardy. The dispute between the defense and prosecutors reached an impasse on Halloween. Judge Whittaker then asked Young Thug if he agreed to a non-negotiation plea. This effectively means that the defense and prosecution will ultimately have no impact on the rapper’s punishment. Whittaker was ultimately responsible for making the decision, and she decided to send the young thug home.
“If you succeed in this [your] Probation, I hope you have probation,” Judge Whittaker said as he handed down the sentence. “At the end of those 15 years, I will count the remainder of my service as time served,” Young Thug said in a statement shortly after Judge Whitaker’s decision. The rapper made it clear that he plans to change his lifestyle. “I really have a good heart,” he explained. “I’ve grown up, now I’m older. I’m wiser. It’s more things to rap about.” He also thanked the judge for his decision. “I take full responsibility for my charges,” he asserted. “You were literally the best thing that ever happened to me in the last two and a half years of my life.”
