Hernandez Govan defeated a murder plot in Memphis, and the loved ones of Youn Dolph were heartbroken, prosecutors said the family was “troubled” by the verdict that allowed the so-called masterminds to walk.
Gowan was accused of playing the puppet master in the 2021 killing of Memphis rap star, allegedly hiring shooters and setting up an ambush. But the jury didn’t believe it.
Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy said the family didn’t want to talk to the media, but made one thing clear: They don’t blame the prosecutor.
“I want to point out that the family is very upset and doesn’t want to talk to the media, but they do say they didn’t blame the trial team, and despite their disappointment, they feel that the trial team did everything they can. I want to say they did everything they could;
Govan was never accused of pulling the trigger himself. Prosecutors said he gave the green light and should have given it ten grand equipment to set it up.
He allegedly gave the shooters a challenge about Dolph’s schedule, especially when he attended community events in Memphis, which he provided them with the perfect window.
The case became even more tangled after Smith testified that Gotty’s big brother, Big Jook, who sold for $100,000 on Dolph’s head. Prosecutors claimed Govan was tense with Big Jook and even talked with him about payment and cover-up plans after hitting.
One of the shooters, Cornelius Smith Jr., flipped over Govan and testified that the whole thing was Govan’s setup. He said Govan chose to date, gave batches, and stayed in touch through the burner phone.
Prosecutors said Big Jook wanted to avenge Dolph’s Joker and Yo Gotti and believed Govan was the one who made it happen.
Gowan’s defense team poked holes in Smith’s credibility and said the state’s cases did not add up.
The jury agreed.
Dolph’s cousin and Paper Road Empire artist Key Glock did not back down. After his acquittal, he tweeted “My city failed, but what new features are there…” before demolishing it.
His frustration reflects the atmosphere of Memphis, and many in hip-hop are disappointed with the system.
As for Gowan, he told the court that he was leaving Memphis and getting a “new starting point” elsewhere.
