Yhapojj is just the thing for a sad boy rapper. For the record, hip-hop has become less celebratory and more moody over the past decade. Call it the Drake effect or the Soundcloud effect, but it’s a phenomenon. Yhapojj’s lyrics are filled with reflection and humility about his influences. However, what sets him apart is his work. The rapper prefers to bare his soul on lush and colorful instrumentals. Suffice it to say, No Ceilings isn’t a happy album, but it sounds as bright and lush as its pink artwork suggests.
Yhapojj has a speed, and that’s rap. He uses the same process throughout the album. It’s then up to the production staff to keep the sound fresh and ultimately deliver. The bittersweet “All Falls Down” is part Lil Uzi Vert-style emo rap. “Blo K” sounds like a long-lost cut from Playboi Carti’s Die Lit days, while “Untouchable” is reminiscent of classic cloud-rap production. Yhabojj’s lyrics are often difficult to decipher because his speech is slurred or his voice is hoarse. The good news is that the lyrics are no longer the focus, but rather another instrument to fill out the musical bed of each song. “No Ceilings” is completely different from Lil Wayne’s tape of the same name, but it has its own identity.
