Wiz Khalifa’s favorite pastime has landed him in legal trouble, as he was just sentenced to nine months in a Romanian prison for marijuana possession.
Romanian online newspaper Cancan reported on Thursday (December 18) that the Constanta Court of Appeal sentenced the rapper to prison for possessing drugs for personal use.
The incident that led to the court ruling occurred in July 2024, when Wiz was stopped by Romanian police for allegedly smoking marijuana on stage at Beach, Please!. Festival in Costinesti, Romania. This Eastern European country has strict drug laws with severe penalties for drug possession.
Weisz was briefly detained after the show and found to be in possession of more than 18 grams of marijuana. He was later released without being detained. At the time, he took responsibility for his actions in a tweet on July 14, 2024.
“Last night’s show was amazing,” he wrote. “My shining on stage was not any disrespect to the Romanian country. They were very respectful and let me go. I will be back soon. But no more big ass next time.”
After the incident in 2024, he initially received a summons and a fine of only 3,000 lei, approximately $700. However, the country’s prosecutor’s office appealed the decision, seeking a prison sentence. Romanian authorities may seek to file an extradition request because Viz is a U.S. citizen and does not live in Romania.
According to TMZ, Wiz’s attorneys are appealing the prison sentence. XXL has reached out to the rapper’s team for comment.
