Donald Trump has signed an executive order requiring proof of citizenship registered by voters in federal elections.
The move sparked immediate opposition from voting rights advocates, who warned of widespread disenfranchise.
Under the directive, prospective voters must introduce official documents such as passports, real ID cards or military ID cards to register for federal elections.
The Election Assistance Commission’s mission is to quickly update the federal voter registration form.
The executive order also forces states to clear non-citizens from the voter registration list.
In addition, states are no longer allowed to count received mail or absentee ballots after the election day. States refuse to comply with the risk of losing key federal election funds.
Trump’s administration claims the order is a necessary step in combating voter fraud, explicitly targeting non-referendums.
However, critics point out that such fraud cases are extremely rare, suggesting that the measure is unnecessary and potentially discriminatory.
Legal experts and advocacy groups condemn the order, saying it exceeds the president’s authority and violates constitutional protection.
Voting rights groups also raise alarms that potential disenfranchisement of millions of eligible voters, especially in marginalized communities, are not easily accessible to the required identification documents.
The threat of not complying with federal election funds in the states has sparked additional criticism. Opponents label tactical mandatory as electoral state governance.
Several lawsuits are expected to challenge the order.
