Viola Davis admits she misread the need for Chadwick Boseman to do special care at the black bottom of Ma Rainey before learning that he was quietly fighting colon cancer.
In a conversation with The Times, Davis reflects on her initial reaction to Boseman’s live routine, which included massages and calm music provided by his girlfriend and makeup artist.
“Part of me is a little judged – why do you need all of this?” she said. “I hardly know they’re because he’s dying.”
Boseman died in August 2020 at the age of 43, and he kept the diagnosis of nearly everyone, including his co-star.
He was first diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2016 and was later promoted to stage 4. Despite undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, he continued to work in physically demanding roles, including Marshall, DA 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s black bottom.
Davis said she felt regretful after learning the truth, praising Bowsman for his craft’s power and commitment.
She used to call him “the beautiful man and artist” and said his legacy goes far beyond his role as King T’Challa in Black Panther. She added that his authenticity and integrity will continue to influence generations of actors.
“He is not only the Black Panther, but the Black Panther hero,” Davis said in his last interview with The Guardian.
Boseman’s final performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom won him an Academy Award nomination and Best Actor Award from the Film Actors Association.
He died on August 28, 2020 at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by his wife Taylor Simone and his family.
