The cover project has been a long time in the making, dating back to early 2019 when T-Pain won The Masked Singer by covering songs by Montell Jordan, Joan Jett and Sam Smith, among others.

“This cover album has been years in the making. I started recording it right after I won ‘The Masked Singer,'” he told Rolling Stone. “It was put on hold for a while, but now that I’m independent, I can do whatever I want through Nappy Boy Entertainment, which is something I’ve felt strongly about for a long time.”

The 38-year-old singer continued: “When you hear T-Pain is making a cover album, the songs aren’t what you expect, and that’s what I think is cool about it.”

Although T-Pain stated on Stagecoach that the second part of On Top of the Covers will be released “soon,” he did not announce a release date.
