SZA and Drew Barrymore recently shared an intimate moment that was years in the making, with the chart-topping singer expressing how much the actress means to her while explaining one of her biggest hits.
The “Snooze” singer and Barrymore had a heartfelt exchange during an interview on Monday (January 13), which clearly left fans and viewers moved as well as each other. The tear-jerking moment sparked discussion about the inspiration behind SZA’s fan-favorite song “Drew Barrymore,” from her 2017 album Ctrl.
However, what started as a tribute to Barrymore’s TDE signers for the song eventually turned into a confessional from SZA expressing the actress’ profound impact on her life.

SZA began by expressing her excitement at being able to share the origins of the song’s title directly with Drew. “It’s not just named after you, it’s named after the energy you carry,” SZA said. “Even my clothing inspiration comes from the feelings you bring me throughout my life. Like being carefree and considerate.
She went on to tell a deeply personal story about a letter she wrote but never sent to Barrymore. “When you’re young and you’re a black woman, there aren’t many examples of that,” she explained. “One of the few cute white women on TV that I really look up to is you, because you are who you are. You are quirky. Your smile is not perfect. I have a slight speech impediment and people are always laughing. .They’ll say, “What does this mean? “But I love the way you talk. Just everything you are.
Clearly moved, Barrymore responded with both humility and gratitude, recalling a specific time they discussed the song before the interview. Still, SZA’s admiration for Barrymore’s authenticity and spirit shines through. “Your laughter, both in the movie and in real life, reminds me of all the things that make me nervous, but in you, it shines,” she said. “You allow me to be myself and it’s so cool that it’s okay. I just love it.
