Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi is firing back at a Texas group that claims to mediate between rival gangs following a fatal mass shooting that targeted a local rapper at a child’s birthday party.
The Youth Peace and Justice Foundation announced a 21-day conditional ceasefire between Stockton gangs following the Nov. 29 shooting at the Monkey Space Ballroom that left four people dead, including three children.
The target of the shooting was reportedly rapper MBnel, who attended the party with Stockton artists Fly Boy Dougi3 and NanoMB. According to his father, MBnel feared for his life after the attack and went into hiding.
Fly Boy Dougi3 and NanoMB were also present during the filming. Two rappers are currently behind bars on parole violations for attending a party.
“I don’t even know if they’re coming to Stockton,” Fugazi said. “All I know is we’re already doing what they told us to do.”
The foundation made the announcement while asking city leaders to reject $8 million in state funding for violence prevention. The organization is positioning itself as a free alternative to existing programs in the city.
Fugazi flatly rejected the ultimatum.
“Go somewhere else,” she said. “You will not profit from our city by taking advantage of this tragedy.”
The foundation’s ceasefire proposal includes 21 days for city officials to implement unspecified changes. However, both Stockton police and the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said they have no evidence that any peace summit took place.
“At this time, no information has been provided to determine who attended the meeting, how any purported agreement was monitored, enforced or maintained, or whether any agreement was actually reached,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
Fugazi said her office has met with 308 gang members this year representing 54 different gangs, 88 percent of whom are from the most active groups. Despite those efforts, the birthday party shooting highlighted the city’s ongoing violence.
The foundation, which is headquartered in Uvalde, Texas, declined interview requests from local media. Their press release demanded immediate action from city leaders but provided no evidence of the gang negotiations they claimed.
