Stefon Diggs scored a legal victory this week when a Massachusetts judge granted his request to delay his arraignment until after the New England Patriots complete their playoff run.
The veteran wide receiver will now face the felony strangulation charge on February 13 instead of January 23 as originally scheduled. Dedham District Court granted the defense’s motion to delay the proceedings, giving Diggs nearly three weeks more before he appears in court.
His attorney, David Meier, successfully argued for a delay, pushing the arraignment date to Feb. 8, five days after Super Bowl Sunday.
Stefon Diggs is facing serious criminal charges stemming from an alleged incident involving his former personal chef that occurred on December 2 at his Massachusetts residence. After the 32-year-old recipient filed a complaint on Dec. 22, police charged her with felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery.
According to court documents obtained by multiple news outlets, the alleged victim claims Diggs became violent during a dispute over unpaid wages. The police report details allegations that Diggs slapped the woman and choked her during a confrontation at her Dedham home.
Meyer has categorically denied all allegations against his client in previous media statements. Defense lawyers called the allegations “unsubstantiated, unsubstantiated and never investigated” and suggested the timing suggested an ulterior motive related to the employment dispute.
“This was the direct result of a financial dispute between the employee and his employer that was not resolved to the employee’s satisfaction,” Meyer said in the statement. “Stephen looks forward to finding out the truth in court.”
Postponing the game allows Stefon Diggs to fully focus on the Patriots’ wild-card playoff game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night at Gillette Stadium. New England secured a playoff berth with a win over Miami in Week 18 for the first time since 2021.
The NFL has not announced any disciplinary action under its personal conduct policy while the legal proceedings continue.
A Feb. 13 arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. in Dedham District Court, where Diggs will enter formal pleas to the felony and misdemeanor charges filed against him.
