here we go.
New York City just got more chaotic. This sprawling metropolis has fallen into quite a recession, and I don’t mean the music. In the early hours of Sunday (January 5), just as the controversial congestion pricing plan was being implemented, another violent incident occurred at a subway station in the Bronx. Are you familiar with it? If not, please take note. It may also appear in places like Atlanta and Los Angeles.
Let me tell you about the new policy affecting the entire East Coast. Get naked with me. For New Yorkers and New Jerseyans, the new policy is pushing more commuters into an increasingly dangerous subway system.
Let’s talk about “congestion pricing” because it does play an important role overall.
At about 4 a.m. on Sunday (January 5), a 38-year-old man was stabbed in the arm in a residential area. This sounds like a very dangerous time. The attackers managed to escape. He’s like Kool G Rap on the run. The injured person is currently in stable condition, but this is more worrying.
Five similar attacks in just a few days have fueled fears that congestion charging is forcing people back onto trains. The thinking is that the police cannot meet security needs. Let’s be honest, New York has been on the decline since we emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic. But what about tourism?
congestion charging
New York is already too expensive for people from out of town. A congestion charge will make it even more expensive. The policy is a plan to reduce traffic and emissions by charging drivers a toll to enter Manhattan below 60th Street during rush hours.
Correct.
They want to get more people on mass transit – further taxing people. But here’s the thing: New York City’s subway system is already delayed, overcrowded, and crime is clearly a problem. Again, nothing brand new.
But tourists are the lifeblood of New York’s economy. They ride the subway and feel like New Yorkers. Some might see it as a tour, a way to explore a big city in public. The risk appears to be rising that disruption to the subway system will become a pressing issue. Now, that 38-year-old is not named Betsy or Logan. When that happens, I think it becomes an emergency.
Take a look at this.
Things are crazy, the guardian angel is back. You have to be a real OG to remember them. They are a legendary vigilante group that began patrolling subway platforms in the late 1970s. It’s the counterpart to “Dirty Harry” and “Death Wish” Charles Bronson. I digress. They are back again. I’m not a fan because I think their leader, Curtis Sliwa, may be a racist and a liar. I will say that most of the early guardian angels were black or Hispanic/Latino.
How does all this impact congestion charging? I have no idea. I think this is bad. I hope they shut it down because fewer people are interested in New York City. In the meantime, if you’re headed to New York, keep your eyes and sanity open!
