One person was killed and two others were injured in a deadly shooting Sunday afternoon near the grand opening of Nipsey Hussle’s Marathon Burger’s new Long Beach location.
The violence happened around 3:34 p.m. near Broadway and Pine Avenue in downtown Long Beach, about half a block from where hundreds of people had gathered to celebrate the expansion of Nipsey Hussle’s restaurant chain.
CBS Los Angeles reported that multiple people were shot and one person died. The gunshots sent crowds running through the streets and emergency crews rushing to the scene.
Long Beach Police Department officers detained two people in connection with the shooting, and paramedics transported the injured to a local hospital.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots during a community celebration.
One person told CBS Los Angeles, “We heard about 13 gunshots. It’s supposed to be a good thing for people. Someone trying to do something for the community and work and stuff like that, so for something like this to happen. It’s horrible.”
The opening of Marathon Burger drew a lot of attention from members of the hip-hop community and Long Beach residents.
Snoop Dogg serves as an investing partner in the Pine Avenue store, working with Nipsey Hussle’s brother, Blacc Sam, to expand the restaurant chain beyond its original Fairfax location.
Marathon Burger represents how rapper Nipsey Hussle’s entrepreneurial vision lives on in his family following his death in 2019.
Blacc Sam founded the restaurant chain to honor his late brother’s legacy while investing in the community through food service. The Long Beach location is the fourth Marathon Burger restaurant in Los Angeles County.
Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson posted a celebratory message about the restaurant’s opening hours before the shooting. The mayor’s social media posts featured the ribbon-cutting ceremony and photo opportunities.
Police investigators are working to determine what led to deadly violence near a community celebration.
Event organizers emphasized that the shooting had nothing to do with the Marathon Burger’s grand opening celebration.
