Rob49’s success over the past year has surprised even him. Since becoming an XXL freshman in 2023, he has collaborated with Cardi B and Lil Wayne and appeared on Travis Scott’s Utopia album. Last summer, Rob released a deluxe edition of his 4 God II project, but has been rolling out special features over the next few months. He’s added his special “NO” style to many of his peers’ tracks, building his own momentum organically over the past seven months. In an exclusive interview with XXL, Rob49 talks about his new single “On Dat Money” featuring Cardi, teaming up with Weezy, headlining his own tour, and launching a new project starring some heavyweights.
Rob49 teamed up with Cardi B to release “On Dat Money” just over a week ago. When the record came to fruition, he was shocked by the way Buddy gave him the song and even promoted it. Not to mention, her down-to-earth demeanor made filming the film seamless and effortless.
“My oldest brother called me and he was like, ‘Well, I’m making Cardi stuff for you,'” Rob told XXL. “‘I’m like, you know, when people say things like that, you’re like, ‘Bro, shut up, bro. You screwed up,’ you know what I’m saying?” He’s like, ‘No’ , she likes your stuff and she might want to use some of it for her album or something like that. I ended up just sending the song, like, “Let’s see if she likes this song.” And she did that.
Rob49 explained that the song came to fruition earlier this year, and Cardi actually asked Rob to use the song for his own project, which will be released late this summer or early fall. “When I went to make the appointment, the guy said, ‘You know, Cardi wrote this song,'” he continued. “‘I’m like, ‘Really?’ So, when I knew I was going to drop my album, I was like, ‘Ask her if she’s going to use it, and if she’s not going to use it, tell her to let me have it.’ ” I don’t like that, I swear to God, that’s one of the most genuine people I’ve ever worked with on this.
Speaking of Rob49’s upcoming project, names like Meek Mill, Polo G, Hunxho, and Skilla Baby are all expected to appear on the tracklist.
Rob also plans to embark on a solo tour soon. He will touch some of the cities he holds dear. “I’ve always been afraid of touring alone, and I thought it was time,” he said. “I want to go to some of my favorite cities. Probably like Houston, Atlanta, I really like Cincinnati. I don’t know, I’m just going to pick a few dates that I really want to go to and do it. But I think it’s time Yeah, fa sho, because I’ve never done any shows in those places.
