Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s VMA performance caused a stir after the rapper grabbed her castmate’s butt live on stage, and she’s now reflecting on the moment that seemed to inspire their current romance.
Back in 2012, the two performed Rih’s “Cockiness (Remix)” at the annual party, and while this was the first time the public had seen them together, it was apparently also the first time they’d met. Even though they hadn’t dated in about seven years, that intimate moment gave the superstar singer’s team a clue that something was brewing.
“So that was the day we thought we’d met,” she explains in a new cover story for Interview magazine, out Tuesday (April 9). “In rehearsals, it was like manager to manager, client to client. So when he grabbed my ass that night, everyone thought I was going to… my team was worried that I wanted to put his head in his fucking cape superior.
“But I was like, ‘Ah, no.’ That’s why everyone was like, ‘Oh my gosh. She likes him.'”
Months later, the two were seen getting cozy on the set of Rocky’s “Fashion Killa” video, although the “Umbrella” hitmaker confirmed in the same chat that they were definitely not dating at the time.
Fast forward to 2024, and the two now have two children.
A$AP Rocky showed off his unique way of honoring his family at the Bottega Veneta show during Milan Fashion Week in February.
On the red carpet, he rocked a custom ring engraved with his family’s birthstones. The piece, designed by Popular Jewelry, is called the Quadruple R ring because it represents him (real name Rakim Mayers) and Rihanna (real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty) and their children RZA and Riot.
Rihanna gave birth to her second child in Los Angeles on August 3, 2023, after showing off her baby bump during the 2023 Super Bowl halftime show last February.
The couple kept the name of their first son a secret for nearly a year. Just before his first birthday, his Wu-Tang Clan name was revealed. RZA was born on May 13, 2022 and will soon celebrate his second birthday.
