Rapsody pays tribute to multi-talented artist Baby Tate after her heroic efforts to collaborate with her on her recent album Please Don’t Cry.
In an exclusive interview with AllHipHop at the 2024 BET Awards, Rapsody detailed the story of “A Ballad For Homegirls,” which she co-wrote with Baby Tate. With help from Black Odyssey. Detailing the song’s creative process, Rapsody explained how the personal nature of the song’s concept influenced the way she conveyed her message.
“The concept came up and Black Odyssey and I were in Texas making the record,” she said. “I was going through my own relationship issues at the time, but I would always talk to my besties, and this album I put out was about me. So it was like, I knew I wasn’t the only one talking to the girls in our family. people.
“So I thought, let me capture that feeling for all of us. I want it to feel like I’m talking to you too, right. So I did the dialogue pieces, but I knew I wanted a singer. I just wanted to Bring another flare and complete the story.
Rapsody also explained how Baby Tate’s dual identity as an artist helped fill a major void on the record after Jill Scott couldn’t pull out of the song.
“Initially, I contacted Jo Scott because I wanted her to do the vocals, and then Tate did the verses, but she wasn’t available,” she said. “But I called Baby Tate. She humbly and graciously said yes. I told her, I said, I know you can rap, but I know you can sing too. I don’t know if anyone else does that. I Heard you singing. I know who your mom is and she absolutely kills it, so that’s how it all came together.
