Popcaan’s devotion to Drake was on full display when a Kendrick Lamar song came up during a recent conversation.
The dancehall singer has been signed to Drizzy’s OVO Sound label since 2016, so his relationship with the Toronto-born superstar runs deep. Backstage at Unruly Fest earlier this month, Pop made it clear how he felt when Kendrick’s song started playing in the background.
While chatting with Link Up TV, Pop suddenly stopped talking and looked up to find the song playing in disbelief.
“I don’t care.” I didn’t want to hear this. Change the station,” he said.
The moment occurs around the one-minute mark below.
This isn’t the first time Popcaan dropped ten toes for Drake.
After the release of VIEWS, Mr. Vegas called Drizzy “fake” for not properly praising the dancehall artists he featured on the album, including Beenie Man and Popcaan himself.
“If Drake wanted that record, why would he tie Beenie Man to that record? Or why would Beenie Man do something new?” Vegas asked in an interview with Ebro Morning News at the time “Then I would listen to the record further and after the record was done you could hear the end of the record and Beenie Man was doing the outro. So I was like, Drake is running amok with my artist. You use my artist as an intro.”
Mr. Vegas was referring to “Controlla,” which includes a Beenie Man sample from his song “Tear Off Mi Garment.” A leaked version of the song also featured Popcaan, although it didn’t make the final cut of the album. However, Poppy’s “Luh Yuh Bad” sample did feature “Too Good” with Rihanna, with both dancehall artists credited on their respective songs.
In a reply that has since been deleted, Popkan pledged allegiance to his OVO group and assured Mr. Vegas that his help was not needed.
“OVO is unruly and we don’t need your help. Don’t try to violate my brother now. “You know nothing about Unruly or OVO. You don’t need to defend Popkan.
