Playboi Carti was issued an assault summons for allegedly punching a limousine driver during a recent tour in Utah, according to a Wasatch County police report obtained by KSL.com.
The Atlanta rapper, whose real name is Jordan Terrell Carter, was traveling from Park City to Utah County to rehearse before an Oct. 3 show at the Delta Center when the incident occurred on Oct. 2. The 29-year-old artist, who recently made Billboard history with all 30 songs from his album MUSIC charting on the Hot 100 chart, is now facing legal consequences over the feud.
According to police reports, a limousine driver picked up Carter and his entourage from a Park City hotel and drove them to Utah Valley University in Orem for rehearsals. The driver told deputies that Carter and his girlfriend were smoking marijuana in the car and getting into an argument that made him feel uncomfortable.
“(The driver) stated that the fight had escalated to the point where he felt uncomfortable and wanted to deescalate the situation and separate them. The client had two SUVs that needed service and the other was a security guard. (The driver) stated that he contacted him and told him that he wanted them (to be in) separate vehicles,” the police report states.
Carter’s girlfriend was angry when the driver pulled over and separated the couple. Everyone got out of two cars, and the driver said Carter was “distraught and hit his girlfriend,” and although he didn’t witness the actual attack, he noticed she was “hunched over, close to her chest.”
The driver was then targeted by Carter. “I turned my head to the right for just a minute and this (expletive) hit me in the face; hit me in the (expletive) face,” the driver told KSL.com.
Responding deputies documented physical evidence of the assault. “On (the driver’s) left jaw, you can see redness consistent with physical contact. There is also a line on his chin with a space in it. It appears to be consistent with the space between the knuckles of a fist or an open hand. (The driver) remains in shock, but after the photo and statement, he was free to leave the area and wanted to do so,” the report states.
Deputies interviewed all parties separately and received conflicting accounts of the incident. Carter’s girlfriend claimed she hit the driver because he was “meddling in her business,” while the security guard told officers he elbowed the driver with a martial arts move. However, Carter admitted to the assault, telling officers “he punched (the driver) for stopping in a weird place and letting them out of the car.”
Carter, who was issued a summons for the assault, seemed frustrated with the legal process. “While he (Carter) asked if there was a solution now, I told him there was no and that it would require court proceedings,” the deputy wrote in the report. “(Carter) complied with law enforcement but was angry that (the limousine driver) did this based on his identity. Jordan complied with photos of his hands but did not allow any photos of his face to identify the hands.”
The incident adds to Carter’s legal troubles, as he was arrested in 2023 on suspicion of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend, charges his lawyers denied. Carter founded record label Opium in 2019 and has become one of Generation Z’s most influential rappers since entering the mainstream in 2017.
The assault charge will require Carter to appear in court to resolve the charges.
