Playboi Carti won the Artist of the Year award at the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players Awards on Thursday (September 6) in New York City. After being recognized for her contributions to the rap community over the past year, Cardi used the moment to pay tribute to Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, who died earlier in the day at the age of 34.
“I want to thank my mom, I want to thank God,” Playboi Carti begins his acceptance speech below. “Thank you Billboard. This is my first award. I’m so happy to be here. RIP Rich Homie Quan. ATL in the building. Shout out to all of New York. I love you guys. Thank you.”

Playboi Carti shares memories with Rich Homie Quan
As news of Rich Homie Quan’s untimely death began to spread throughout the hip-hop world on Thursday afternoon, Playboi Carti was one of many rappers who quickly paid tribute to the late rapper.
Later that night, before Carti mentioned Quan during his Artist of the Year acceptance speech, the Opium executive took to Instagram to share a fond memory he shared with Rich Homie Quan. Behind-the-scenes footage shared by Playboi Carti found him and Quan rapping to Rich Homie Quan’s 2015 song “The Most,” featuring Young Thug.
